The theme of the year at “L’Ecole Des Buis” school is JAPAN.
I have to say, it is a great source of inspiration for me! I conduct collage and drawing workshops. After the workshop end, I can not stop exploring that universe further on, in my notebook. My favorites ones are the KOÏ and DRAGONS as well as the wonderful minimalistic design of the everyday objects . There is plenty of them in my ceramic mic mic board on Pinterest.
Ce fut une merveilleuse source d’inspiration pour moi! J’ai régulièrement animé des ateliers de collage et de dessin. Après chaque atelier, je ne pouvais m’empêcher de continuer de jouer avec les formes des carpes KOï et des dragons serpents ainsi que le design minimaliste des objets usuels dont la culture japonaise est riche – Allez faire un tour sur Pinterestdans mon tableau “japanese tonality”, vous y trouverez des trésors d’inspiration…
Last April we went back to Pardes-Hana for vacation. Girls went to their former school for a week, therefore I had a little time to work on this site from my ipad. We stayed at friends, I enjoyed working from there and visiting the coffee places I used to go. So Weird to be in a place we know so well, feeling at home and yet it is not home anymore…

The building of the Shrine of the Book houses / the Dead Sea Scrolls/ consists of a white dome over a building located two-thirds below the ground. The dome is reflected in a pool of water that surrounds it. Across from the white dome is a black basalt wall. The colors and shapes of the building are based on the imagery of the Scroll of the War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness, whereas the white dome symbolizes the Sons of Light and the black wall symbolizes the Sons of Darkness. The interior of the shrine was designed to depict the environment in which the scrolls were found. The entire structure was designed to resemble a pot in which the scrolls were found. (wikipedia)
The Model of Jerusalem in the Second Temple Period, reconstructs the topography and architectural character of the city as it was prior to its destruction by the Romans in 66 CE, and provides historical context to the Shrine’s presentation of the Dead Sea Scrolls…
We came the day of the destruction of this amazing art installation!!! so we could not enter the bamboo Forest or climb upward through it and view Jerusalem from above the Art Garden. however, just watching it was a delight!
“The concept of Big Bambú has nothing to do with bamboo; it represents the invisible architecture of life and living things“: 10,000 bamboo poles, 80,000 meters of climbing rope, 25 rock climbers, 7 weeks, 350 hours, and not a single architectural sketch. American artists Mike and Doug Starn were invited to use the Museum’s Art Garden to create Big Bambú – a 17-meter high installation built entirely of bamboo. The artists chose to name their Jerusalem installation 5,000 Arms to Hold You.
Big Bambú grew and developed over time as a living organism, embodying the tension between order and chaos, and reflecting the constantly changing realities of nature, social constructs, and culture.
Indiana’s iconic work “LOVE” (Ahava in Hebrew) was first created for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art in 1964 and in 1973 was selected for a United States postage stamp, the first of their regular series of “Love” stamps. Sculptural versions of the image have been installed at numerous American and international locations. In 1977 he created a Hebrew version using Cor-ten steel for the Israel Museum (wikipedia).

The installation of Inversion (2008), by American artist Roxy Paine – Rising 42-feet tall and hand-constructed out of over 7,000 metal plate, pipe, and rod stainless steel elements, Inversion was the first of Paine’s sculptures from his Dendroid series in which the dendritic form appears upside down, all of its weight resting on the smallest and finest limbs.
Paine has said of Inversion: “It could be read as being emblematic of, and a monument to, how much we have altered the natural world. It could also be read as a meditation on humanity’s need to distill every entity into its component parts and then restructure them.” Paine’s long interest in the juxtaposition of nature and industry has brought form to an extensive body of work.
The children drew a few elements from an envelop ( animal, place character, onomatopeia) – They wrote a short story based on those words. Then, with the aid of a few comics techniques brought as examples, they drew (comic style) about it.

Les enfants ont écrit une histoire en s’appuyant sur quelques éléments piochés dans une enveloppe (animal, lieu, onomatopée, caractère) puis, ils l’ont mise en images au format BD.
Pour les onomatopées, j’avais trouvé des traductions en écriture japonaise sur le net – invérifiables, bien sûr, en raison de ma méconnaissance totale du japonais, c’était juste pour créer un contexte et une atmosphère…au risque d’écrire n’importe quoi…
How fascinating are the Dragons! In particular this Japanese ones. They might be dangerous but they are not exactly hostiles creatures like our european fire breathing dragons. After I conducted a collage workshop about dragons I felt like exploring further those reptilian lines, just the fun of the doodle. I creates a few prints based on it.

Les dragons japonais sont de fascinantes créatures. Bien qu’associés aux forces de la Nature, elles sont dangereuses certes, mais pas vraiment hostiles. Elles ne montrent pas le caractère violent des dragons occidentaux Bref, ces dragons là se laissent dessiner complaisamment. Après avoir animé un atelier collage sur les dragons, j ai eu envie d’explore les lignes de ces reptiles plus en avant, pour mon plaisir personnel de griffonnage. J’en ai fait des cartes et des posters.
Il est le caractère principal de l ‘histoire de Yael Altuvia. Une très belle histoire qu’elle racontait à ses neveux quand ils étaient petits. J’ai commencé ce projet d’illustration il y a de cela quelques années. Pour des raisons de changement de pays, d’une “petite”parenthèse médicale (vie est belle maintenant!), le projet est resté en suspend sur sa fin, à trois pages de sa fin exactement. Je souhaite intensément le terminer. Sans doute aurais-je envie de changer des choses car le temps a passé, l’illustratrice a changée aussi… Pourvu que Yael ne fasse pas comme moi, qu’elle souhaite, elle aussi, changer l’histoire! Dans ce cas, nous serions partis pour quelques années supplémentaires d’élaboration. Luno pourrait alors éventuellement être un vieux Berger ou reconverti dans la “high Tech”.
C’est un projet particulier, Yael est une amie, elle n’a jamais inscrit le livre dans le temps réel, seul lui importe, au bout du compte, que l ‘histoire trouve sa place dans les images et vice-versa.
Luno vient un peu du moyen orient car il y est né, dans la tête de son auteur tout au moins. La majeur partie des illustrations ont été réalisées autour de Pardes-hana/Karkour( nord de Tel Avis). Pour autant en terme d’illustrations, si le cadre traduit ça et là les influences de sa naissance, j’ai voulu en accord avec Yael, que Luno soit de partout et de nulle part. Cela se traduit par des éléments de décor, des paysages plus ou moins réalistes empruntants tant à l’Europe, l’orient extrême ou moyen….espérons que chacun s’y sente chez soit.

He is the main character of Yael Altuvia’s story. A beautiful story she used to read to her nephews when they were little. For various reasons (moving countries and medical interludes… eveything is fine by now) the project was delayed. It remained blocked at three page from the end.
I am very much willing to achieve it by now. I might change some elements of the illustrations because time passed by and the illustrator also went through a few substantial transformations. Let’s hope Yael won’t do the same as me with the text, if so, we might be forced to delay the book for a few more years. Luno might be, by then, a grown up guy who quit being a shepherd for a high tech career or something similar
It is a special project. Yael is a friend. She was never interested in dead lines (I am sure she’d like it to be achieved by now but not at any conditions). It is paramount for her that the story would fit into the images and vice-versa.
To some extend, Luno comes from a middle east background because he was born there, in his author’s mind at least. Also, the main part of the illustrations were made in Pardes-Hana/Karkour (north from Tel Aviv) which inevitably did influence the drawings. However, although there are elements coming from Yael and I immediate surrounding, when we got started with this project, it was important for us that Luno would be coming from about nowhere … or everywhere. The book landscape is made of mixt elements from both easten and westen world. Hopefully everybody would feel at home within the pages.
The Japanese dragon collages we created, with the children, during the workshop at the “école des buis”school made me feel like creating my own digital version of it.

Les dragons japonais créés avec les enfants de l’atelier de l’Ecole des Buis m’ont donné envie de faire une version digitale de l’animal.
The children instantly hooked up on the dragon idea. The dragon is such a powerful image. Especially,the Japanese one. He is friendlier, thiner, lighter than his european cousins. Wingless, he’s got a snake body, tiger feet with eagle nails, camel’s head with dear or gazelle horns. His eyes are similar to the hare and his ears come from the bull, his neck has a lion mane. The children drew their inspiration from various images (from mu magic classeur!) collected on the net. Some of them chose to draw but most of them went for “COLLAGE” and started a collective production of colorful paper scales.

Les enfant furent immédiatement séduits par le caractère de ce dragon. Le dragon japonais est plutôt pacifique avec son corps de serpent, ses pattes de tigre à griffes d’aigle. La forme de sa tête est celle d’un dromadaire surmontée d’une paire de cornes de cerf ou d’antilope. les yeux peuvent être celui du lièvre et les oreilles du taureau, le cou est souvent munie d’une crinière de lion. Les enfants se sont basés sur des images d’inspiration collectées sur le net, certain ont préféré le dessin au collage mais pour la plupart, nous nous sommes lancés dans une production collective d’écailles de papier en forme de franges ou de petits dômes.
The KOÏ is a fantastic inspirational creature. I dare you to draw only one Koï! When you start getting around their magic shapes and colors you just can’t stop drawing them. No wonder they are such a famous decorative pattern throughout the asian world.
After having read together a leaflet I had prepared about the origin, history and estheticism of the KOÏ, the children drew their own KOÏ with Posca pens on black carton sheet. We wrapped them with transparent paper sothat their work is enhanced and ready to become a beautiful personal gift or just a result of the workshop to be kept at reach,

La carpe Koï est un sujet fantastique, une source d ‘inspiration infinie. Je défie quiconque de dessiner sa première carpe sans qu’elle ne soit suivie de BEAUCOUP d’autres. Une fois qu’on a approché la vague des moustaches, les petites billes rondes de côté en guise d’yeux, les nageoires plus ou moins voilées, et ces belles taches rouges qui n’ont rien à envier à celles noires ou brunes des vaches des Alpes… on ne peut s’empêcher d’en peupler des pages entières.
Après avoir lu, avec les enfants, le petit livret descriptif de l’histoire, l’origine, la symbolique et l’esthétisme des carpes, nous les avons dessinées au posca sur Canson noir, signé, emballées dans du film transparent. Ainsi les enfants mettent en valeur leur création – Bel objet – Prêt garder ou à offrir 🙂 !
(ENGL) For this workshop, we decided to explore the beautiful minimalistic design of the Japanese ceramics lines.
I showed the children, a collection of inspiring images from my pinterest board called “ceramic mic mic”, where Various teapots and bowls shapes from Japan were lying. That’s what I love with Pinterest. It is like opening a treasure box kept in the attic. It saves hours or even weeks of surfing in search for the right image. You got it …I am a Pinterest fan!
The kids cut, displayed and glued color papers on a double postcard format. As usual we wrapped it in a transparent paper, to keep their work clean and ready to be offered…or kept.

(FR) J’avais envie d’explorer avec les enfants les merveilleuses lignes du Design minimaliste des poteries japonaises.
Je leur ai présenté une collection d’images thésaurisées dans mon tableau ceramic mic mic sur Pinterest , où l’on trouve des bols et des théières japonaises de toute beauté.
Les enfants ont découpé des papiers multicolors pour les agencer et coller sur un format double carte. Le groupe était formé d’enfants de 6 -7 ans, le découpage fut minutieux donc parfois laborieux. Je recommande pour de tel découpages, un petit détournement d’usage: des petits ciseaux à ongles pointus et courbés.
(ENGL) On March 11th, 2011, Japan was hit by the most powerful earthquake in at least 100 years. A design contest took place through the internet where Various artists created a poster, (which was often based on the red famous sun) in order to sell it at an auction. The money then went to the victims of the Tsunami. Inspired by all the designs we saw at that time, we decided to use the frame of this contest for our workshop and create an “help Japan”poster made of collages.

(FR) En 2011, une compétition ouverte à tous les amoureux du design fut mise en place sur le net pour venir en aide au sinistrés du Tsunami. Nous nous sommes référés au cadre de cette compétition pour réaliser un poster help Japan par collages.
(ENGL) The children received a basic map I made for them. They browsed through a classeur of Japan related images and all sort of maps showing landforms, roads…etc. and started cutting, arranging and glueing their own shapes. I was lucky enough that only children of “10 plus” turned up. Although I had prepared a sample (which I made at my own pace….), I only realised, during the workshop, that cutting small shape can be a bit tricky and time consuming for children. As a result, it was an intensive and cooperative workshop. Everybody ended up with a beautiful detailed, intuitive, elegant map !!! I still have to post the final result…

(FR) On a réalisé une carte illustrée en collages. Les enfants ont cherché dans un classeur toutes sortes d’images en lien avec le japon ainsi que des cartes pour situer les reliefs, les voix de communication ou les lieux culturels, cultuels….etc. puis, ils ont découpés leurs propres formes. Pour autant, le but n’était pas forcement d’être le plus précis possible. Disons que nous nous sommes permis quelques libertés géographiques au nom de l’esthétisme et de la facilité.
J’ai eu la chance d’accueillir des enfants de 10 ans et plus. Je ne m’étais pas rendu compte (même en faisant une démo au préalable, á mon rythmes) du côté laborieux des petits découpages. Ce fut coopératif et intensif mais au bout du compte les cartes étaient belles et délicates. Il me reste à poster le résultat final…
